FOR THE LOVE OF THE TUNE

IN MEMORY OF CAROL SPELLMAN

Our local Irish Music Community experienced a sad loss with the passing of Carol Spellman in 2017.

Carol lit up any room with her warmth, wit, humor, and style.

A part of Portland’s Irish Music scene from the very beginning, she was a huge supporter of the tradition, and an inspiration to others. She preserved and passed on some when she made a documentary on Irish Women and Traditional Music in 2002: For the Love of the Tune.

This Memorial Weekend, we at CCÉ hope to start a tradition of remembering loved ones in our community who have passed on. We are starting this weekend, by sharing Carol’s video. Many of us have seen it—but a recent re-watching of it was a revelation.  Not only does the film feature legends such as Julia Clifford, Siobhan Peoples, Kitty Hayes, and many more—but also some local heroes who were in Portland near the time of the filming, including Julie Langan and Maire Egan. You’ll see many more faces from past and present as you view this delightful and stirring tribute.

Through the kindness of the Spellman family, we are happy to offer this viewing free of charge. However, we will gladly accept donations that will go to a scholarship fund for young aspiring female musicians. Carol’s legacy will live on into the next generation.
